Arsenic and Old Lace is one of my favourite classic dark comedies, a delightful theatre standard for over 80 years. It's a show nearly tailored for community theatre - with its varied character roles and age ranges - embracing the age-old tradition of farce laced with black humour and satire. From a peaceful setting in a genteel neighbourhood comes a tale of suspicion, revenge, family, and serial murder. This is a rare comedy that has an outlandish mix of styles - a little wit, a little absurdity, a little slapstick - but with strong emphasis on civility, family, and the crazy bonds that tie us together.
Oddly enough, the play was originally intended to be a heavy drama (inspired by a real-life case in Connecticut), but the producers convinced Kesselring that it would be so much more attractive as a screwball comedy. And they were absolutely right! The 1944 film adaptation, directed by the legendary Frank Capra, had a star-studded cast featuring Cary Grant, Raymond Massey, Jack Carson, Edward Everett Horton, and Peter Lorre. The references to horror film legend Boris Karloff in the play are a sly joke, as Mr. Karloff himself originated the role of Jonathan Brewster on Broadway; when he left the production, he asked his friend Bela Lugosi to take over the role.
Many thanks to the creative talents who have volunteered their time, energy and vision to make this show a memorable one. From the cast to the crew to the designers and producers, front of house, friends and family, you have my heartfelt thanks. I shall toast you all with a glass
of elderberry wine (if I can find some)!
This is my third "shot of Arsenic" over the years - I stage managed in 1985, designed & directed in 1998 and, 25 years later, I'm thrilled to be directing again with a whole new cast and a new appreciation for the old lace in my life. I'm told that with age comes wisdom; I guess I'll have to age a little longer, because it's FAR more fun to be a mad Brewster!
Cheers,
VICTORIA

He holds a BAH in Drama from Queen’s University, and an MFA in Creative Writing and Theatre Academia from the University of British Columbia, where his thesis was (funnily enough) a full-length stage play. He would like to thank the cast, crew, audience, and his family for enabling him to strut and fret his hour upon the stage.

He’s also dabbled as a director of Steel Magnolias, his own creation, Billie Holiday, and has appeared in a variety of films and commercials. This is his second production for the Firehall Theatre, having played Ernie in last year’s Separate Beds. He’s looking forward to exploring his more sinister side.

Amanda is excited to make her debut at Firehall Theatre after a return to the stage with TCT’s Blithe Spirit in 2022. Amanda became interested in acting while growing up in London Ontario as part of the Original Kids Theatre Group. While studying to become a physiotherapist, Amanda pursued her love of theatre by working as a program director, at Camp Woodeden, co-coordinating music and drama activities for kids with physical disabilities. Now that Amanda has settled in her career, she is happy to have the time to get back on the stage. Amanda would like to thank her fellow cast and crew for creating such a fun experience and an amazing show, as well as her parents for encouraging her love of acting as she was growing up. Have a great show!

Guy’s earlier stage experience was as Juror #6 in Twelve Angry Jurors, directed by Marg Newby for the St. Thomas Community Players. In Arsenic and Old Lace he plays the Reverend Dr. Harper, a character he is quite familiar with as he is an active member of his church and close friends with several Pastors. He is grateful for another chance to be a part of a talented ensemble cast.

You may recognize her from Thorold Community Theatre where she started by running the sound and lighting board for Alone Together and The Murder Room, then making her way onstage in Farce of Nature, Office Hours, Sin, Sex and The CIA and in Port Colborne’s production of Mamma Mia. She was also the Technical Stage Manager in Nana’s Naughty Knickers. During the pandemic, Deb directed an audio version of And Then The Lights went Out, which was recorded completely remotely. Working with such a talented cast and crew on this production has been a highlight and one she will not forget.

Victoria has been a familiar face at Firehall for many years, appearing on stage as well as behind the scenes. She was happy to direct two short plays for 2022's Conversations Without Curtains but returned to the limelight last winter for An Ideal Husband. Other Firehall projects include Falsettos, Death and the Maiden, Ruthless!, The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee,and summer Shakespeare in the Vineyard with Much Ado About Nothing and A Midsummer Night's Dream. Onstage or backstage, in Niagara, the GTA or abroad, it's been over 45 years of creativity! Cheers to all who make the playhouse a connected community and a celebration of art in all its forms.

Firehall Theatre is run entirely by volunteers. From box office to sound booth, from stage manager to actor, every aspect of theatre operations is run by people like you - members of the community - who love theatre and get involved. Whether you are a first-time audience member or a long-standing part of the Firehall family, we are grateful for your support. With ticket sales being our main source of income, we continue striving to keep costs to you, our patrons, low. All revenue goes straight into the productions and to maintaining the historic building in which we operate.
Beginning as the Niagara Falls Music Theatre Society, we have been bringing theatre to life in Niagara for over 60 years. Originally using this 1917 fire hall for storage, the Society began performing in the building in 1975. The City of Niagara Falls still owns the structure, leasing it to the Society.
Attend shows! Spread the word! Volunteer! Find out more about our upcoming shows and how you can get involved by visiting the other sections of our site.
